A Singing Computer in 1961
My daughter pointed this video out to me on YouTube and I was just blown away by it. It features the first computer to ever “sing” via programming. This was in the year 1961, the computer was an IBM 7094, and the song was “Daisy Bell”, also know as “Bicycle Built for Two.” It really is amazing and I cannot imagine how excited and proud these computer programmers must have been when they first heard their IBM mainframe sing.
Now, sixty years later, this seems trivial as technology has advanced so far in that span. However, this must have served as a turning point for what was to come and the modern vocaloid movement really started here, in the early 1960s.
